How Amotekun intercepted over 150 northerners from Zamfara in Ibadan

Operatives of Amotekun Corps in Oyo State on Tuesday intercepted a truck loaded with scores of youths from the North traveling to Ogun State.

It was gathered that the vehicle was conveying over 100 youths packed in the truck which reportedly took off from Zamfara State.

Reports said that the truck, which was heading to Ogere in Ogun State was stopped around University of Ibadan-Bodija Road at about 4pm on Tuesday.

Some of the occupants of the truck were said to have jumped off and fled immediately they sighted the security men.

The interception reportedly caused panic among the people in the area, who suspected that those arrested could be terrorists or bandits.

In his remarks, the Commandant of Amotekun in Oyo State, Col. Olayinka Adeyanju (retd.), said those arrested could not be described as terrorists or criminals yet.

He said, “We did not arrest Boko Haram members or criminals. Those we arrested are here. Policemen are here, DSS operatives are here and the NSCDC men are also here.

“They are profiling them as I talk to you. We saw them in a truck and moving such huge number of people is suspicious and that was why we stopped them and brought them here.

“We arrested them and we invited other security agencies to come and profile them.

“With that, they will know if there is any of those who escaped from jail among them. They will find out their mission and where they are going to. They will be released if they are found to be  law-abiding citizens.”

It was, however, learnt that the profiled migrants were ordered to return to their state but it could not be ascertained if they complied while those who escaped on sighting the Amotekun operatives disappeared into the city.

The burnt bus in front of Eagle Square Abuja

A Coaster bus has caught fire in front of Eagle Square in Abuja. The incident which happened on Tuesday night sent passers-by scampering for safety as the vehicle went into flames.

The occupants safely alighted before the fire razed down the bus, it was gathered.

There were speculations that it was a case of a car explosion but the Police Public Relations Officer in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Josephine Adeh debunked the claim.

She confirmed the incident but said it was a case of fire outbreak and not an explosion.

According to her, the bus was coming from the Maitama axis of the FCT when it caught fire.

“No life or personal effect, other than the razed vehicle, was damaged as the situation was aptly managed by Police operatives from the Central Police Station thereby curbing any form of escalation,” she said in a statement.

“Members of the public are therefore enjoined to disregard contrary and misleading narratives, emanating from malicious and misguided quarters even as the Command continues to intensify the security of the territory in this transitional period and beyond.”

The incident is coming few days to the inauguration of President-elect Bola Tinubu scheduled to hold at Eagle Square.

Seven killed, houses razed as gunmen invade community
Suspected Fulani militants attacked and killed about seven persons in Warkan village, Atyap land in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Several houses were also razed down by the attackers with the number of those injured yet to be ascertained.A source told our correspondent that the attackers stormed the village in their numbers, saying that a search is ongoing to ascertain the casualties in the area.

He stated that the most worrisome is the inability of those in authority to take proactive measures to avert the ugly incident that has been going on for years, particularly in Atyap land.He further explained, “One hardly understands the rationale behind these organised attacks and killings that have become the order of the day in Atyap land. Most worrisome is the inability of those in authority both at the federal and state levels to take proactive steps to bring an end to the attacks.”

Meanwhile, efforts to get reactions from both the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Jalige, and the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, proved abortive as they did not respond to calls put across to them by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report.

‘I must be President of Nigeria’ – Peter Obi

Peter Obi

Former Anambra State Governor, and presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, in the last election, Mr Peter Obi has said that he must be President of Nigeria.

Obi, who is in court with the winner of the just concluded election, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said he is convinced in his spirit that he will be President.

The LP candidate spoke during the launch of a book written in his honour: ‘Peter Obi: Many Voices, One Perspective’, in Awka, Anambra State.

Obi said: “Anyone who thinks I’m on transit is wasting his time. Let me tell you, I must be the president of this country. I’m sure of that. If it is not today, it must be tomorrow.

“Other people who want to be, should come and tell us what they want to do, and how to do it. This is my country, I don’t have dual citizenship. If anyone thinks I am going to run away from Nigeria, they are lying.

“I have three engagements in Anambra and Lagos today. I will be speaking in Lagos tonight. We will not leave Nigeria. I am not in a hurry to become the president, but I know it must happen.

“For three years I was in court in Anambra to reclaim my governorship, just to challenge the process. Many people tried to discourage me, but I said even if the entire four years tenure elapsed for us to prove a point and correct the process, I will be fulfilled.

“My argument is that, let’s do what is right. I always tell everyone that I will not give people money to do the wrong thing. I have been the chairman of a committee; TETFUND committee, and Prof Mahmood was my member. We know ourselves, but when he became INEC chairman, I have never met him. I told him, you’re an umpire, just do what is right.

“If you have the chance to do the right thing, and you insist on perpetuating anarchy, then, it will consume everybody one day. I insist that we must do the right thing.

“I was in an event yesterday in Abuja, and it was World Food Organisation. I listened to report that stated that Nigeria will face intense hunger in years to come.

“It is Nigeria that will face hunger, not Peter Obi. The report listed Borno, Adamawa and Yobe as the states that will be worse hit, but those three states put together are five times larger in land mass of Israel, yet Egypt exports food, but Nigeria cannot feed itself.

“So we must cultivate a habit of doing the right thing. If we don’t do the right thing, it will consume us some day.”

One of the editors of the book, Prof Chinyere Okunna in her remarks said the launching was geared towards raising funds for the financing of the matter before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

“We believe in Obi. He is not a saint, but among all the people who contested to become president, none comes close to him in humility, education, love of the people, experience and knowledge.

“Litigation is a very capital intensive project and we want to support him through this launching. It was very clear that Obi won the election, but we want to call on the judiciary to be upright in their judgement and do the right thing,” she said.
